Chiang Mai, with its cool winter breeze and rich cultural heritage, is about to host one of the most exciting design events in Southeast Asia: Chiang Mai Design Week 2024 (CMDW2024).

It is a perfect time for visitors to explore the northern capital’s artistic scene while discovering its rich culture and commitment to a greener future.

From December 7-15, Chiang Mai will celebrate the 10th edition of its design festival, inviting both locals and travelers to experience a unique blend of creativity, technology, and sustainability.

The festival will feature a range of exhibitions, workshops, performances, and talks, all set in the heart of this beautiful city.

This year’s theme, “Scaling Local: Creativity, Technology, and Sustainability - For Reviving Recovery," highlights the city's efforts to use innovation to rebuild its economy, tackle environmental issues, and promote sustainable growth.

Organized by Thailand's Creative Economy Agency (CEA), the CMDW2024 is one milestone in a festival that represents the dynamic blend of tradition and modern innovation within Chiang Mai.

The event will highlight how traditional arts of the city merge with advanced technologies to bring about a more sustainable and vibrant future.

By placing creativity, technology, and sustainability at the forefront, the festival will seek to investigate how these core themes can help raise local communities and build a better future for Chiang Mai and beyond.

CMDW2024 will fall across two major precincts of the Old Town, focusing on historic areas such as the iconic Three Kings Monument and the Lam Chang area through to the bustling inner-city activity hub of Chang Moi district, home to both the Chiang Mai Design Creative Centre (TCDC Chiang Mai) and the action-packed Thapae Gate.

The festival then extends up to Hang Dong and San Kamphaeng, each inviting visitors into different dimensions of this city's creative pulse.

Over the course of nine days, the festival will feature more than 150 events, offering a rare opportunity to see how creativity can spark positive change.

The program includes exhibitions, performances, talks, workshops, and much more—each designed to provoke conversation, inspire action, and highlight the ways design can transform lives.

From interactive installations to sustainable design showcases, CMDW2024 offers a firsthand look at the future of creativity in action.

At the core of CMDW2024 are three main strands: creativity, technology, and sustainability. It will analyse how these forces can cross-fertilize in innovative solutions to community problems.

Particular attention will be placed on the impact technology can play as a force for change.

CMDW2024 will show how new technologies are enhancing local creative processes and how they can solve pressing environmental issues.

Whether through sustainable solutions or urban regeneration, the festival will put the spotlight on how technology is changing communities and opening doors toward a greener future.

In the process of following global trends, CMDW2024 also underscores the future of eco-conscious design.

In most of the works featured, there will be highlights on sustainable materials, which aim to promote resource circulation and support practices that foster growth in the long run.

Guests will learn how design will power environmental conservation and social development.

This year's event isn't just a celebration of creativity but harnesses the power of creativity for permanent change.

Throughout the event, there are various innovative exhibitions ranging from fashion and architecture to social initiatives.

These will showcase how design can make lives and communities better, be it in the form of improving urban spaces or by elevating simple products.

For instance, there are works made of upcycled materials, art pieces that raise awareness about environmental issues, and designs that strive to improve local livelihoods.

CMDW2024 will also feature a wide array of talks and workshops, creating a platform for dialogue on the future of creative industries.

These sessions will bring together local and international experts to discuss such topics as sustainable design, the circular economy, and creative entrepreneurship.

Roundtable discussions and panel sessions will offer insights into how creativity can help in global sustainability efforts, particularly in addressing climate change and fostering inclusive growth.

For those who would like a deeper cultural experience, CMDW2024 will be hosting a variety of live performances and music events, including LABB.Fest 2024, Chiang Mai Street Jazz Festival 2024, and Chiang Mai HO.

Local and international artists will be performing across the city, with acts from Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, and beyond.

These shows will show the many different ways creativity can connect cultures and unite audiences in one shared experience.

Another major focus of the festival is on creative district development. Programs such as Urban Symphony and the Lam Chang

International Film Festival will discuss how design can be used to regenerate urban spaces and turn them into sustainable creative ecosystems.

These initiatives hope to inspire other cities to embrace similar models for fostering creative economies and sustainable growth.

CMDW2024 will boast various markets for visitors who wish to shop local and take home unique, eco-friendly products.

The Pop Market will bring together more than 140 curated brands representing sustainable fashion, handmade goods, and local art.

Then there are the second-hand goods and local markets, where visitors can support entrepreneurs and creators affected by recent floods in Chiang Mai.

Such markets allow the chance to directly support recovery and add resilience to the creative community of this city.

From historic Chiang Mai city districts and into the creative precincts, CMDW 2024 will serve as a manifestation of an immersive world, reflecting transformative design, technology, and sustainable development.

With the festival showing exhibitions, performances, and workshops, visitors can see how local creativity and global innovation might bring about change in making the future brighter.
