The U.S. Army's 1st Cavalry Division has introduced a newly adapted counter-unmanned aerial system (C-UAS) qualification at Fort Hood, Texas, as battlefield lessons from Ukraine and the Middle East drive major changes in how U.S. infantry prepares for modern warfare. Conducted by D Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, the qualification is part of the division's Transformation in Contact (TiC) initiative, preparing frontline Soldiers to counter one of the fastest-growing threats on today's battlefield: armed and reconnaissance drones.

Developed during the Pegasus Charge experimentation campaign, the qualification trains Soldiers to detect, track, and engage hostile drones using standard infantry weapons under realistic combat conditions. Adapted from an earlier program developed by the 101st Airborne Division, the course has been modified to better replicate today's drone threats by increasing target speed and introducing more demanding attack profiles based on evolving battlefield observations. The initiative reflects the Army's effort to rapidly integrate operational lessons into unit-level training rather than waiting for lengthy doctrinal updates.
