冬至要來了，「湯圓」準備好了嗎？來看如何用英文聊冬至

「冬至」的英文怎麼說？講到冬至，湯圓絕對不能少。「湯圓」的英文是什麼，大家又都吃什麼口味呢？今天 VoiceTube 要教大家與冬至有關的英文，快學起來，跟外國朋友介紹一下吧！

冬至 winter solstice / Dongzhi

「冬至」屬於二十四節氣之一，有兩種表達方式，一是 winter solstice，而另一個則是中文音譯的 Dongzhi，有時也會稱為 the Donzhi Festival 或是 the Winter Solstice Festival，表達「冬至」這個節慶。
Solstice 為名詞，為「至，至日」的意思，指一年之中，太陽位於距離赤道最遠、南北極正上方兩個事件之一，因此才會有「冬至」、「夏至」（summer solstice）之分。

想要向外國朋友介紹冬至，你可以這麼說：

In China, Dongzhi was originally celebrated as an end-of-harvest festival.
在中國，冬至原本是慶祝豐收的節慶。

Today, it is observed with a family reunion over the long night, when pink and white tangyuan are eaten in sweet broth to symbolize family unity and prosperity.
而現在，冬至是慶祝團圓的日子，吃白色和粉紅色甜湯圓，象徵家族團圓跟財富。

湯圓 Tangyuan

「湯圓」最常見的英文翻譯是用中文音譯，tangyuan 或 tang yuan。如果向外國朋友解釋湯圓是什麼，可以用以下說法喔！

Glutinous rice ball / rice ball

Glutinous rice 為「糯米」，或者也稱 sticky rice「黏黏的米飯」。湯圓的原料為糯米，因此西方便用 glutinous rice ball 來指「湯圓」，而 sweet rice ball 就是指「甜湯圓」。但 rice ball 也可以指「飯糰」。

Dumpling / sticky rice dumpling

Dumpling 指有包餡料的食物，可以指「糰子，水餃」。西方人將有包餡料的湯圓也稱作 dumpling。「甜湯圓」就是 sweet dumpling，「鹹湯圓」就是 savory dumpling，又或者直接形容湯圓為「糯米做的糰子」sticky rice dumpling 。但因為糰子和水餃英文都是 dumpling，使用上容易混淆。像是以圖片搜尋 "savory dumpling" 會出現肉包、餃類等食物，而搜尋 "sticky rice dumpling" 找到的圖片多為粽子。

「湯圓」是東方文化特有的食物，西方並沒有專指湯圓的英文，直接音譯 tangyuan 為最不會混淆外國朋友的用法。

常見湯圓口味有：

• Sesame tangyuan 芝麻湯圓
• Peanut tangyuan 花生湯圓
• Red bean tangyuan紅豆湯圓
