麥根第在渥太華向媒體表示：「我很難過地告訴大家，韋恩賴特基地發生的事故已造成人員死亡及受傷。」不過，他並未透露死傷人數，也未說明這起「令人悲痛」的事故原因。

大火持續延燒 軍方與皇家騎警聯手調查
麥根第指出，截至17日晚間，基地內仍有大火持續燃燒。他表示：「我不記得近年來曾發生過類似的事故。」加拿大軍方與加拿大皇家騎警（Royal Canadian Mounted Police）已著手調查事故原因。
韋恩賴特基地位於亞伯達省中東部，距離省會艾德蒙頓（Edmonton）以東約210公里。根據2021年人口普查資料，基地當時駐有1310名軍方及文職人員；基地北側的韋恩賴特鎮則約有6600名居民。
火勢蔓延至基地外 卡尼政府與地方當局協調應對
韋恩萊特地方政府在社群媒體發文表示，火勢已越過基地圍欄，蔓延至附近地區，但當局尚未發布疏散命令。加拿大總理卡尼（Mark Carney）也在社群媒體表示，聯邦政府正與亞伯達省政府及地方當局密切合作。
加拿大國防參謀長卡里尼昂（Jennie Carignan）將軍則指出，加拿大武裝部隊正全力配合聯邦、省級及地方政府的應對工作。她強調：「我們的首要任務仍是確保部隊成員、他們的家人及當地社區的福祉。」
