🥲 Hundreds of Madrid residents rallied behind an 87-year-old pensioner who was evicted from her home Maricarmen Abascal was given just 30 minutes to gather her essential belongings. She was carried out of the building on a medical stretcher and taken away in an ambulance, while hundreds of people outside tried to stop the eviction and chanted: “Maricarmen, you are not alone.” Her apartment in Madrid’s affluent Retiro district had been acquired by an investment fund, which sought a steep increase in the rent. According to Abascal’s lawyer, the owners refused to suspend the eviction despite ongoing legal proceedings, humanitarian appeals and efforts by the authorities to find alternative accommodation for her. Tensions erupted at the entrance as police forcibly removed protesters who were blocking the doorway. The case has become another symbol of Spain’s housing crisis, as rents continue to rise in major cities while affordable housing remains in short supply.

The 87-year-old woman, Maricarmen Abascal, whose eviction ignited the housing protests across Spain has died. People took to the streets tonight in her honor, and two of Spain’s biggest unions are planning a general strike. The corporate landlord class is a parasite on society. https://t.co/WvWa4rQF8k
