蹲坐像顆蓬鬆雪球！起身後會露出大長腿的「北極兔」

位於地球極北的雪白世界，除了有熟悉的北極熊、北極狐以外還有一身毛茸茸、蹲在地上像顆蓬鬆雪球的「北極兔」，乍看像是耳朵稍微短一點的兔子，站立起來四肢又意外的修長，尤其像袋鼠般充滿爆發力的後腿，更方便牠們在遇到危險時能在厚實的雪地中一路狂奔。

比一般兔子稍微大一點，約55-71公分的體長、4-5.5公斤的體重，偏胖的體型可以讓牠們在身體內儲存更多的熱量及脂肪來對抗北極嚴寒的氣候，一身圓潤蓬鬆的絨毛與較小的耳朵可以讓牠們減少熱能的流失並能在極寒的環境下成長生活。

強而有力的後腿，能幫助牠們站立起來觀察周遭環境，還能讓牠們在厚厚的雪地中一躍而出，有危險來時最快可以每小時60公里的速度在雪地中快速衝刺，長著長毛、較大的腳掌，也方便牠們在冰冷的雪地中跳動奔走。

生活在格陵蘭冰原與加拿大北部等北極圈附近的北極兔，在北部極區內的兔子毛色終年呈現白色。

而偏南部地區的北極兔平常則是灰褐色，到了冬天就會轉白，在雪地中形成絕佳的保護色。

能夠適應北極與山地環境的牠們，特別的是除了會以苔蘚、樹根為食之外，有些北極兔偶爾還會吃肉，牠們會先聞出食物的位置，再用強力且尖銳的爪子挖出食物，也會使用爪子挖出地洞儲存食糧。

雖然屬於雜食性動物，不過在北極圈中仍屬於食物鏈的底層，牠們天敵有北極狐、北極狼與人類等等，生活在北極的人們也是會獵補北極兔作為食物。
