Werapong Prapha: Meet the man on a (trade) mission to save Thailand’s economy

Werapong Prapha found himself a wanted man in April. As the Thai government scrambled to finalise a European Union free trade agreement to blunt the impact of US tariffs, the opposition Democrat Party deputy leader was headhunted for a high-stakes rescue mission.

Commerce Minister Suphajee Suthumpun tore up parliamentary etiquette with a stark request: Werapong must return to his former job as Thailand's trade representative.

The invitation sparked an immediate outcry within the Democrat ranks, leaving Werapong with a career-defining choice: remain loyal to Thailand’s oldest party, or help lead efforts to rescue an export-dependent economy in its hour of need.

On the horns of a dilemma

The ultimatum was delivered by Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva: choose the party or the government post.

Abhisit warned that serving simultaneously as a Democrat deputy leader and as Thailand’s trade representative was a recipe for “confusion and conflict”.

“Ultimately, we agreed that if Werapong wanted to take the position, he would need to resign both as deputy leader and as a party member,” he declared.

Within hours of Abhisit’s message, Werapong announced his resignation as Democrat deputy leader on Facebook.

“Since the Thai trade representative operates on behalf of the government, this role may not align with the Democrat Party’s current role of scrutinising the government.

Therefore, I have resigned as deputy party leader to ensure that my work is transparent and honest,” he stated, adding that patriotism outweighed party loyalty in times of national emergency.

“No role is more important than helping Thailand move forward in the midst of the multiple crises we are facing,” he said.

Werapong, 41, originally took the role of Trade Representative under the Paetongtarn Shinawatra government in November 2024. His key task remains unchanged: clinch an FTA with the EU to open up a market of 440 million consumers and bypass tightening trade restrictions elsewhere.

From accountant to trade rep

Born on September 30, 1984, Werapong completed his schooling in New Zealand before earning a bachelor’s degree in accounting and international business from Victoria University of Wellington in 2007.

He moved to the UK and obtained a master’s degree in development management from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) in 2012.

The University of Cambridge furnished him with a second master’s, this time in business administration, after he won a scholarship for outstanding contributions to civil society.

Werapong launched his career as an accountant and financial consultant with Ernst & Young in New Zealand.

After three years with the accountancy multinational, he returned to Bangkok in 2012 to join the Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI) as a research communications manager.

A year later, he joined the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), taking on the role of communications and outreach consultant.

In 2014, Werapong joined Oxfam’s Bangkok office, leading a coalition of non-governmental organisations dedicated to alleviating global poverty. He served as the enterprise development and private sector coordinator for nearly three years.

In 2016, he moved to Boston to join Oxfam America as senior adviser for campaigns and advocacy, a position he held until 2022.

He then relocated to London to join The Freedom Fund, an international nonprofit that works to end slavery.

After more than two years as the fund’s senior programme manager on corporate accountability, he departed in 2024 and returned to Thailand, where he was appointed as Thai trade representative for Paetongtarn’s government in November of that year.

His tenure was cut short in September 2025 after the Constitutional Court dismissed Paetongtarn for an ethical breach in her handling of the Cambodia border dispute.

After Abhisit returned to the Democrat helm last October, he was appointed deputy party leader for international economic affairs.

Werapong became the first politician to register his same-sex partnership after the marriage-equality law took effect last year. He married his life partner, Chantawit Tantasith, last July, shortly after Chantawit assumed office as deputy commerce minister in Paetongtarn’s administration.

Werapong filed his financial report with the National Anti-Corruption Commission last year, declaring assets of 6.8 million baht, including a condominium worth 5 million, 1.3 million in investments, and 494,690 baht in bank deposits.
