In her first press conference since officially taking office, Paetongtarn dismissed media reports that her father, former Prime Minister Thaksin, wants the scheme to be scrapped, but did say that it will have to be re-examined and discussed among the coalition parties.
She claimed that the situation has changed since digital wallet scheme was initiated, so more study is needed, as well ensuring compliance with the established rules of fiscal discipline.
The previous administration launched the first stage of the scheme on August 1st, by opening public registration via smartphone. Millions of people have already registered.
Those who do not have smartphones can start registering on September 1st. Disbursement of the 10,000 baht per head financial benefit is scheduled for the last quarter of this year.
The prime minister denied that she was or will be controlled or dominated by Thaksin, insisting that she is independent and has her own opinions. She did admit, though, that she occasionally consults Thaksin and they have mutual respect for each other’s opinions.
Asked whether Thaksin will be given any post in the government, Paetongtarn said she has not thought about thatissue yet and that she would have to consider the legal implications.
The prime minister said that, although she had worked with her predecessor, Srettha Thavisin, for about a year, she had not expected to become prime minister so soon.
Nevertheless, she said she is ready to bear the burden, face the challenges and serve the people by addressing the pressing problems plaguing the economy, the health care system, illegal narcotics and the development of “soft” power.
She also denied a report claiming that Thaksin had made clear that no member of the Wongsuwan family would be included in the new cabinet.
