The recent arrest of a Thai Airways flight attendant on drug-related offences in Australia has renewed attention on Thailand’s role as a key hub used by transnational drug trafficking syndicates targeting the Australian market.

The case is the latest in a series of six major drug-smuggling cases this year alone linked to Thailand and uncovered by Australian authorities.

On Jan 23, three 22-year-old men from the Australian state of Victoria were arrested after arriving at Sydney Airport from Thailand.

Australian Border Force (ABF) officers allegedly found more than 42kg of illicit drugs in their luggage, including about 34kg of heroin and 8kg of methamphetamine.

The 42kg seizure had an estimated street value of AU$24.4 million.

The trio were charged with importing and possessing a commercial quantity of controlled drugs, offences carrying a maximum penalty of life imprisonment in Australia.

A 26-year-old man from New South Wales was charged after allegedly attempting to import about 20kg of heroin from Thailand on Jan 24. The man had travelled from Bangkok to Sydney, where ABF officers detected anomalies in his luggage.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) arrested and charged him with importing a commercial quantity of heroin, estimated to be worth about AU$10 million.

In March, a 66-year-old Malaysian man was charged after allegedly attempting to import about 5kg of methamphetamine into Australia.

The drugs were allegedly concealed inside 10 scented powder bottles bearing Thai-language labels in luggage arriving at Sydney Airport on a flight from Thailand.

ABF officers became suspicious during X-ray screening, and narcotics detection dogs assisted in the subsequent search.

On April 23, three unidentified men were charged after allegedly attempting to import about 14kg of heroin through Sydney Airport.

Officers searched their luggage and found large plastic bags concealed within the lining of cloth tote bags bearing designs resembling souvenirs sold in Thailand.

Preliminary tests identified the white powder inside as heroin.

Meanwhile, in late May, a 31-year-old French woman arriving from Thailand was charged after allegedly attempting to import a controlled substance concealed inside a liquid soap bottle.

The bottle was labelled as body wash, but testing confirmed that it contained about 50 grams of 1,4-butanediol (BDO), an industrial chemical often misused as a substitute for gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB).

The latest case involves a 26-year-old Thai Airways flight attendant who was arrested at Melbourne Airport on June 26 after allegedly attempting to import more than 1kg of heroin.

ABF officers found the narcotics concealed in the linings of two of her 12 cloth tote bags after her baggage was selected for inspection.

The AFP has charged the woman with possession and attempted importation of a marketable quantity of heroin. She faces a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison if convicted.
