Official tally shows Chadchart wins second term with 1.5 million votes
Former Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt has won a second term in a landslide, securing 1,537,784 votes out of 2,338,098 ballots cast in Sunday's election, according to official results announced today by Bangkok's Election Commission.
Independent candidate Mallika Boonmeetrakool Mahasook finished a distant second with 304,494 votes.
The other leading candidates were Chaiwat Sathawornwichit of the People's Party, who received 188,144 votes, Anucha Burapachaisri of the Democrat Party with 106,739 votes, and independent candidate M.L. Kornkasiwat Kasemsri with 47,728 votes.
Voter turnout was just over 50% of the 4,428,644 eligible voters. A total of 22,020 ballots were declared invalid, while 52,470 were left blank.
Voters also elected 50 members of the Bangkok Metropolitan Council. The People's Party won 22 seats, followed by the Working People Group with 11, the Democrat Party with eight and the Pheu Thai Life Group with four.
The official results will now be submitted to the central Election Commission for ratification before a formal announcement is made within 30 days of the June 28 election.
