Code red issued in Phuket as heavy rain triggers flooding

Phuket, a popular tourist island, has been hit by widespread flooding this morning after continuous heavy rainfall since early hours, with several areas under water and authorities urging residents to move belongings to higher ground.

The very heavy rainfall began at around 4am, affecting multiple areas, particularly Patong in Kathu district and parts of Muang Phuket district. Floodwaters cover roads in several locations, causing difficulties for small vehicles and leading to traffic congestion.

The water level in the major Bang Yai Canal running through the city has risen by more than 3 metres. Authorities warned that rising water combined with a high tides could slow drainage and increase the risk of further flooding in low-lying areas.

The Meteorological Department has issued a warning of very heavy rainfall across Thailand between July 1st and 3rd, particularly affecting eastern provinces and the southwest coast, as a monsoon trough and seasonal winds continue to influence weather conditions.

Residents in high-risk areas have been urged to remain alert for flash floods and runoffs, especially in the foothills, low-lying communities and areas near waterways.

Phuket municipality has issued a ‘code red’ warning, urging residents to move belongings to higher ground and prepare for possibly worse conditions.

Emergency services remain on standby as authorities continue drainage operations and closely monitor the situation.
