Werapong steps down as Democrat deputy leader for TTR post

Werapong Prapha has tendered his resignation as Democrat party deputy leader to accept an appointment as Thailand Trade Representative (TTR) under Commerce Minister Suphajee Suthumpun.

In his April 12 letter to party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva, Werapong said he had held ongoing discussions with him regarding the offer to serve as Thailand’s trade representative, and that both agreed the position was of significant importance and could deliver substantial benefits to the Thai economy, particularly amid intensifying geopolitical tensions.

He said the trade role could, however, conflict with his position as deputy party leader, especially as the Democrat party is currently in opposition and is tasked with scrutinising the government.

As such, Werapong, who oversaw international economic affairs within the party, said he is stepping down from his party position with immediate effect.

Despite the change in role, he stressed that he remains committed to the ideals which drew him into joining the Democrat Party, namely improving Thailand’s economy and the well-being of its people through modern, practical and globally responsive economic and foreign policies.

He also expressed gratitude for the support he has received during his tenure as deputy leader.

His resignation came a day after Abhisit wrote on his Facebook page that he had not been informed of the matter by Suphajee. It was Werapong who had personally consulted him after being approached for the position.

Abhisit stressed that the role differs from informal advisory positions, as it is an official political appointment with compensation. At the time, he believed discussions were still private and was unaware the government would publicise the matter.

He added that both he and Werapong agreed that the role will benefit from Werapong’s expertise which, in turn, will benefit the country, but that accepting it would mean relinquishing his party role and membership

Werapong, 41, was previously appointed Thailand’s trade representative in the administration of Paetongtarn Shinawatra on November 5th, 2024.
