Student hairstyle regulation revoked since last year - Education Ministry

Thailand’s Ministry of Education reconfirmed today that the regulations regarding the hairstyles of students were officially revoked on January 16th last year and that hairstyle policies are now determined by each school, with the consent of all parties concerned and with respect for human rights, Siripong Angkasakulkiat, spokesman for the ministry, said today.

He added that the ministry has already sent circulars to all schools notifying them of the revocation and that there are no longer any such rules on the length of students’ hair.

He said that students, teachers and school management will discuss and agree to appropriate hairstyle rules.

Siripong said Education Minister Permpoon Chidchob emphasises respect for the human rights of students, especially by providing advice to students via the Semaphitak Centre, whose officials help to promote positive behavioural conduct among students that will not cause harm to the students or negatively affect society.

People’s party MP Parit Wacharasindhu said, however, that the Education Ministry has not addressed the hairstyle issue directly, but has simply transferred the burden from the ministry to individual schools.

He suggested that the ministry should order all schools to stop interfering in student hairstyles.
