Germany has set itself an ambitious goal in space: in the coming years the country plans to launch a network of more than 100 military satellites in low Earth orbit, known as SATCOM Stage 4, to provide secure communications and strengthen already existing capabilities.
According to sources, the leadership of the Bundeswehr’s Space Command stated that the strategy is intended to bolster deterrence in space, as space is becoming an operational or even combat domain, and there is a need to protect and defend the relevant systems.
According to program officials, the new low-Earth-orbit network is viewed as conceptually similar to the systems used by external partners for communications and missile tracking, with an emphasis on preserving resilience and operational readiness.
The commander of Space Command emphasizes that the escalation of the space situation is partly linked to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, which has heightened attention to the security of space treaties and Germany’s defense planning capabilities.
According to the agencies, Germany plans to allocate funds to reconnaissance satellites, sensors, and systems capable of influencing the operation of enemy space assets, including laser solutions and actions against ground control stations.
