A new exhibition at the State Historical Society of Missouri is using military uniforms to tell personal stories of service, memory and transformation.
The exhibition, "W[A]RN and TRANSFORMED: Uniforms as Stories of U.S.," is on display through Aug. 15 at the William Guitar Little Missouri Gallery of Art inside the Center for Missouri Studies in Columbia.
The show explores veterans’ experiences through historic uniforms, war-era posters and contemporary artworks made from uniforms transformed into handmade paper known as Combat Paper.
The exhibition is a collaboration between the State Historical Society of Missouri and the Missouri Historic Costume and Textile Collection at the University of Missouri. It is part of the society’s biennial exhibition series. Visitors are also invited to participate in an interactive element called a "wishing wall," where they can write hopes for the country’s future as part of the America 250 commemoration.
An opening reception will include a panel discussion featuring veterans Drew Cameron, founder of Combat Paper, along with Martin Lesinksi and John Schneider, whose paper artworks appear in the exhibition.
