April is the Month of the Military Child, a time when schools and communities across the nation recognize and celebrate the strength and resilience of children in military families. The Month of the Military Child was established in 1986 by former U.S. Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger to honor the important role military children play while supporting their parents’ service to our country.

Military-connected students often face unique challenges, including frequent moves, changing schools, long separations during deployments, and the stress of having a parent serving away from home. Despite these challenges, military children continue to show courage, flexibility, and strength while holding down the homefront.

Purple is the official color of the military child. It was chosen because it represents all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces, blending Army green, Marine Corps red, and the blues of the Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, and Space Force.

Purple Up! for Military Kids Day on Wednesday April 15th: On this day, students and staff are encouraged to wear purple to show appreciation and support for our military-connected students and their families.
