The United States military has revealed that the latest African Lion 2026 exercises, scheduled to take place in Morocco from April 20 to May 8, will incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) systems and next-generation warfare technologies into field scenarios for the first time. The move signals a bold shift towards integrating cutting-edge technology into multinational military exercises designed to simulate complex and evolving threats.
According to the US Army, the exercises will feature a dynamic testing and innovation centre, effectively an open-air field laboratory embedded within ongoing drills. The facility will allow participating forces to evaluate AI systems and advanced digital technologies in realistic operational conditions, from frontline soldiers to command and control centres, assessing decision-making efficiency, data flow and coordination among units.
The initiative marks a departure from traditional demonstrations, moving from theoretical trials to operational application, and will see defence industry representatives work alongside military planners to align technical capabilities with exercise scenarios.
Experts say the inclusion of Morocco as a testing ground for future warfare technologies is strategically significant. Nabil al-Andalusi, head of the Maghreb Centre for Strategic Studies, told The Arab Weekly that "Morocco’s selection reflects US confidence in its political stability, disciplined military forces and highly capable intelligence partners, essential criteria for testing sensitive AI and command systems."
