The US Central Intelligence Agency has used a new secret tool called Ghost Murmur to locate the American pilot of a downed F-15 in Iran. This was the first field application of the technology, the New York Post reports.
Ghost Murmur uses long-range quantum magnetometry to determine the electromagnetic fingerprint of the human heartbeat. The technology then combines the data with artificial intelligence-based software to isolate the readings from background noise.
"It's like hearing a voice in a stadium, except the stadium is a thousand square miles of desert. In the right conditions, if your heart is beating, we will find you," said one of the sources.
The missing officer had been hiding in a deserted section of a mountain gorge after his F-15 fighter jet was shot down late last week. He was using a Combat Survivor Evader Locator (CSEL) beacon, but even so, his exact location remained unknown to search and rescue teams until the new technology was used.
According to sources, the barren landscape created ideal conditions for the first use of Ghost Murmur. It was "about as clean an environment as one could wish for" due to the low level of electromagnetic interference and the almost complete absence of other human indicators. It is also noted that the thermal contrast between the living body and the desert helped, giving the operators additional confirmation.
However, the capability is not omniscient. It works best in remote, low-clutter environments and requires significant processing time.
