在疫情持續期間我們或多或少都減少了外出,與知己好友見面少了,剩下來的便是與自己相處的時間。宅在家中百無聊賴,除了把一直看不完連續劇追完,其實大可以把握與自我對話、認識自我的機會,正如暢銷詩詞集《Milk and Honey》、《The Sun and Her Flowers》的作家Rupi Kaur所言,“There is nothing better to do with this time, than be useful”。
(The Writer of the Decade)。
——Rupi Kaur

every women’s month i think about the work we can do to lift up the next generation. but i also think about the past generations of women who walked so that we could run. this year in particular in the wake of the pogroms in india where muslims were targeted and killed through systematic state abetted violence by mobs of right wing fundamentalists – i haven’t been able to get the ‘widow colony’ out of my mind. the widow colony is a place in new delhi that houses the sikh widows who survived the 1984 genocide of sikhs. these women are a symbol of resilience for me. they remind me that the work for justice. dignity. and freedom is still ongoing. when i think about what they along with countless other minorities are still enduring. it shows me that we have to keep speaking up. especially those of us in the diaspora who are protected by the citizenships we now carry. there’s lots of times when i feel down. when i feel like giving up on many aspects of life. but then i think of the sikh women before me. who contributed to my survival and progress- and i realize they put their lives on the line so i could live. which means giving up isn’t an option. we have so much work to do. books to write. stories to document. and generations of women to lift to the mountaintops.

i usually end and begin the year by reflecting on goals i accomplished and then i set new ones. i write down all the ways i want to improve and do better. when i tried to do that this week…a wave of anxiety took over my body and i realized what i actually needed was to finally learn how to be where i am. sit with what i have. rather than run off to where i want to be. don’t get me wrong: self-improvement is great. it’s gotten humanity pretty damn far. but the cult of constant self-improvement can rob us of satisfaction in our present moment. so i’m learning how to sit. look around. get familiar with my surroundings. learn about them. get to know them. before i run off to the next thing.

oh my ♥️. you damned thing. even when you break. you don’t break. you mend. you mould. you become. you close and open. you cursed miracle. you magical thing. you always take me on the craziest ride of my life. then you crash. and you burn. then you forget. when the pain is distant. when you can’t smell it anymore. you convince me to hop on and go for another crazy ride allllll over again 🌛
