ASEAN FM Retreat to discuss post-election Myanmar
Post-election developments in Myanmar are expected to top the agenda when ASEAN foreign ministers meet next week in Cebu, where they will also consider a possible framework for establishing a permanent ASEAN special envoy on Myanmar, according to informed sources.
Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuengkhetkaew will attend the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting Retreat on January 28–29, the first such gathering of the year under the Philippine ASEAN chairmanship.
The retreat is intended to set the agenda for ASEAN’s work throughout the year under the theme “Navigating Our Future, Together.”
The Philippines, as the new chair, will present its proposed agenda and priorities for the remainder of its chairmanship. Singapore will serve as the next chair in 2027.
In addition to Myanmar, ministers will exchange views on regional and international developments affecting ASEAN, including global challenges stemming from evolving policies of the Trump administration, according to the sources.
The Philippines will also discuss the implementation of the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus on Myanmar, as concerns persist over the lack of progress following the country’s recent elections. The third phase of the elections will be held on Sunday, January 25.
ASEAN has not sent any observers to the elections. Vietnam and Laos sent officials from their capitals, while Thailand dispatched a representative from the Thai Embassy in Yangon.
Thailand has expressed its readiness to support the Philippines’ ASEAN chairmanship, particularly on key priorities and deliverables.
Bangkok will also advance its own initiatives, including efforts to combat online scams and promote sustainability across the region.
