Pheu Thai downplays concerns over Thaksin interference after royal pardon
Prasert Jantararuangtong, secretary general of the Pheu Thai party, has expressed delight over the royal pardon granted to former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, while dismissing concerns that the veteran politician will interfere in the party’s affairs.
Speaking to reporters at Sanam Luang at 6.55am today, Prasert, also speaking as Minister of Education, described the royal pardon as "heartening news" for all party members and key figures.
He added that, while he shares in the collective joy, he has not yet personally phoned Thaksin to offer his congratulations.
When asked about Thaksin's potential future role within Pheu Thai, now that he is fully cleared of his legal issues, Prasert emphasised the deep emotional ties between the former leader and the party.
"Thaksin has a long-standing bond with the Pheu Thai Party. He is considered the spiritual leader of the party," Prasert said. "Therefore, it is entirely normal and not unusual at all for party members to meet with him."
Nonetheless, the secretary general firmly downplayed speculation that Thaksin would take a hands-on role in directing the party's operations or policy directions. He reassured the public that Pheu Thai operates under a strict institutional framework.
"I don't think Thaksin will interfere in this regard. The party already has an established organisational structure and an executive board that drives its day-to-day operations," he explained.
Despite ruling out formal interference, Prasert admitted that he would not hesitate to seek Thaksin’s guidance given his considerable political pedigree.
"Thaksin is a figure of immense knowledge and experience, having previously served as the country's leader. Receiving advice from him is a common practice. If the opportunity arises, I would be more than happy to consult him on certain matters," Prasert stated.
Regarding internal party reactions, Prasert noted that, while the atmosphere within Pheu Thai is highly celebratory, there have been no formal discussions yet with Paetongtarn Shinawatra, the influential head of the ‘Pheu Thai family’ and Thaksin’s daughter, regarding the next steps following his release on parole and subsequent pardon.
