According to Red Star News, the actor, known as “Fan Hu”, claimed on social media that he received an invitation in December from a person who claimed to work for a Thai studio, offering him a leading role in a TV series, adding that it was an opportunity to play the role in place of another actor who may quit.
He said that the scammer had sent him details of the TV project, including the title of the series, a summary of the plot, the locations and shooting dates, as well as the name of the director, Weerachit Thongjila.
Fan Hu admitted that the details appeared convincing enough that professional actors could be fooled.
He added that he then sent a video clip of his acting and, within an hour, he received a reply saying that they were satisfied and sent him an offer.
Fan Hu flew to Bangkok on December 28th and was driven to a hotel in Bangkok, where he was put in the same room with three other Chinese nationals, who had also been promised roles in the same series.
The actor said he became suspicious because there were several vacant rooms in the hotel, but the four of them were lodged together in the same room.
He said he contacted the director via LINE Chat to ask him about the project and was told that he had nothing to do with it and warned them to be wary of being scammed.
Fan Hu also said that the four of them escaped from the hotel by claiming that they were going out to enjoy Bangkok’s nightlife. They then checked in to another hotel some distance away.
The four of them returned safely to Beijing on December 30th.
