Jefferson Center reopens in Mandalay
The US Embassy in Yangon officially reopened the Jefferson Center in Mandalay on April 30, following extensive renovations necessitated by a major earthquake in 2025, according to a report by The Global New Light of Myanmar.
The center is intended to serve as a vital bridge for relations between the United States and Upper Myanmar.
US Chargé d’Affaires Doug Sonnek hosted a special reception to celebrate the restoration of the historic heritage building. During the event, Sonnek emphasized that the reopening reaffirms the US commitment to providing a safe, modern space for young leaders, scholars, and students to network and collaborate.
The renovation of the Jefferson Center focused on three primary objectives: strengthening the heritage building's structural integrity against future disasters, serving as an innovation hub for regional youth, and providing a venue for cultural and academic exchanges to strengthen people-to-people ties.
The reopening is seen as a strategic restoration of U.S. soft power in Mandalay, particularly following the recent natural disaster.
Officials expect the center to spark a resurgence of educational activities and exchange programmes in the near future.
Myanmar has a new military-backed administration led by President Min Aung Hlaing. Recently, he reduced the prison term of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and placed her under house arrest.
