ASEAN expresses serious concern over US-Iran conflict

ASEAN foreign ministers expressed serious concern Tuesday over the US-Iran conflict, warning that it threatens global energy markets and undermines peace efforts.

In a joint statement, ASEAN called for an immediate cessation of hostilities across the Middle East and urged all involved parties to exercise "utmost self-restraint".

ASEAN also stated that the renewed tensions severely diminish the prospects for a peaceful resolution through dialogue.

The ministers highlighted growing anxieties over maritime security, especially the Strait of Hormuz.

The statement called for the restoration of safe and unimpeded transit passage for vessels and aircraft, opposing any "discriminatory or unilateral measures" that obstruct freedom of navigation under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Beyond immediate security risks, the 11-member bloc warned of severe economic spillover effects on the region.

"We acknowledged the further implications of the continued tensions in the Middle East on regional trade, energy and food security," the statement noted, pointing to potential disruptions in energy markets, supply chains and agricultural inputs such as fertilisers.

To counter these external shocks, the ministers pledged to strengthen internal coordination to protect regional trade and ensure access to healthcare and basic services for vulnerable populations.

The statement also reaffirmed the obligations of all nations to protect civilians, civilian infrastructure and UN peacekeepers under international humanitarian law.

Furthermore, ASEAN members committed to using joint consular frameworks to provide emergency assistance to ASEAN nationals caught in crisis situations across the region.
