On Nut waste-to-energy plant begins full operation

The On Nut Waste-to-Energy Plant launched full commercial operations today, processing at least 1,000 tonnes of municipal waste daily to generate 35 megawatts of electricity.

Operated by Newsky Energy (Bangkok) Co Ltd under a 20-year concession from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), the facility collects garbage from 25 Bangkok districts and has a maximum disposal capacity of 1,600 tonnes per day.

Newsky Energy (Bangkok) chief executive He Ning said waste management remains a critical challenge for the capital, which produces around 10,000 tonnes of garbage daily, making waste-to-energy technology a vital solution to boost efficiency and add value to municipal waste.

The facility utilises enclosed stoker-type incinerators maintained at 850–1,100°C to power high-pressure steam turbines.

Of the 35MW produced, 30MW will be sold to the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), with the remainder powering internal operations.

To prevent odor and environmental impacts on neighboring communities, the plant uses a closed negative-pressure waste pit alongside an AI-powered Electronic Nose (E-nose) sensor array to monitor volatile organic compounds in real time.

Roughly 85% of processed waste is combusted, leaving 15% non-combustible heavy ash, which is tested for hazardous substances before transport to a landfill in Chon Buri.

Company officials plan to develop future recycling applications to convert heavy ash into paving bricks, while fly ash is trapped by activated carbon filters for licensed disposal.

Continuous Emission Monitoring Systems (CEMS) track air quality at the 80-metre chimney stack, with real-time displays available for public viewing alongside noise mitigation barriers and zero-discharge wastewater recycling systems.
