PM Anutin arrives in Kazan for ASEAN-Russia Summit
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul will have a packed schedule during his three-day visit to Russia, including participation in a special ASEAN-Russia summit where energy cooperation, food security and economic connectivity will top the agenda, government spokesperson Rachada Dhnadirek said.
The summit marks the 35th anniversary of ties between the 11-member ASEAN and Russia.
Anutin was greeted at the airport by Russian protocol officials, the head of the Republic of Tatarstan, the mayor of Kazan and Thai Ambassador Sasiwat Wongsinsawat.
In a traditional Russian welcome, women in national dress offered bread to the prime minister and his spouse — a gesture symbolising friendship and hospitality.
The summit, which runs through Thursday, includes a plenary session on regional cooperation and a working lunch focused on integrating ASEAN and Eurasian economies.
Representatives from the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, the Eurasian Economic Union and Russian business groups are taking part.
Anutin is scheduled to address the ASEAN-Russia Business Forum today before attending a gala dinner and cultural performance.
The main summit session on Thursday will feature a leaders' group photo and formal talks, with Anutin delivering a statement on regional issues and future bilateral ties. Leaders are expected to endorse four outcome documents.
Anutin also plans a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss trade, investment, energy and technology — areas both sides see as ripe for growth. He said the talks also aim to create long-term economic opportunities for Thailand.
After Thursday evening's events, Anutin and his delegation will depart for Bangkok, arriving on Friday.
Russia and ASEAN have deepened engagement in recent years as Moscow seeks to expand its influence in Asia. Thailand, a founding ASEAN member, has maintained diplomatic ties with Russia for more than a century.
