Registrations for the Bangkok gubernatorial race began today, with candidates arriving at the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration headquarters in Din Daeng to register and draw their election numbers ahead of next month’s vote.

Bangkok’s voters will cast their ballots on June 28th to choose their preferred candidate to lead the capital for the next four years.

The Bangkok Local Election Commission is organising the registration process for candidates contesting the Bangkok gubernatorial and the Bangkok Metropolitan Council (BMC) elections.

Gubernatorial hopefuls have until June 1st to register and election numbers are assigned by drawing lots.

The results of the draw so far for Bangkok gubernatorial candidates are as follows:

• No. 1 — M.L. Kornkasiwat Kasemsri

• No. 2 — Samai Lalert

• No. 3 — Pongsak Puapornpong

• No. 4 — Prateep Watcharachokkasem

• No. 5 — Anucha Burapachaisri

• No. 6 — Pisan Kittiyaowaman

• No. 7 — Pasapong Chaiviriyavanich

• No. 8 — Veerapoj Lueprasitsakul

• No. 9 — Chadchart Sittipunt

• No. 10 — Chaiwat Sathawornwichit

• No. 11 — Prayoon Kongyot

• No. 12 — Pol Lt Gen Chanthep Seesawed

• No. 13 — Komsan Phanwichatikul

Chadchart Sittipunt, the former Bangkok governor who recently resigned from office to contest the election, arrived at about 6am by bicycle to register officially to run for a second term.

He said he had cycled from his office on Banthat Thong Road alongside his campaign team and members of a cycling network.

Before entering the registration venue, Chadchart said he planned to pay respects to the statue of Indra riding the Erawan elephant, a revered symbol at City Hall.

Chadchart said his decision to seek another term was driven by a desire to continue ongoing work, particularly in boosting the economy through skills training, educational opportunities and opening more trading spaces for the public.

He said his team would include people from diverse professional backgrounds to help develop the capital further.

Asked about lucky charms or preferred ballot numbers, Chadchart said he had brought none with him and was ready to accept any number assigned. He also pledged that, if re-elected, he would continue to be a down-to-earth governor. If re-elected,

Chadchart would become the fourth Bangkok governor to win a second term.

In an interview with Thai PBS, Chadchart reaffirmed his commitment to working with all members of the Bangkok Metropolitan Council (BMC), regardless of political affiliation, adding that the governor does not need to control council members politically, and councillors themselves do not need to belong to any particular party.

Instead, he stressed the importance of cooperation between the governor and all councillors for the benefit of Bangkok residents, adding “Bangkok is a living city that must constantly develop and change.”

He also said that more than 250 projects are currently being prepared, covering environmental issues, education, public health, traffic management and organisational transparency.

Over the next four years, Chadchart said he plans to create more prominent city landmarks, including urban community hubs, pedestrian bridges across the Chao Phraya River and a city museum.

He added that Bangkok must become more competitive with other major cities around the world by attracting investment and stimulating the economy to improve residents’ incomes and quality of life.

Chadchart also highlighted progress in tackling flooding, saying authorities have already fixed more than 70% of the 737 identified flood-risk locations across the capital.

On traffic management, he said AI systems had been introduced to manage traffic lights, improving traffic flow by 12-40% daily.

The city plans to expand the AI system to 200 intersections out of Bangkok’s 500 signal-equipped junctions.

He added that the ‘Traffy Fondue’ platform had received more than three million public complaints, with more than one million cases already resolved, calling the platform a key part of the city’s technology-driven management approach.

Registration for Bangkok councillor candidates will also take place today, with the election scheduled for the same day as the gubernatorial vote.
