Thailand opens market for imports under WTO framework
The Thai government has approved the opening of the domestic market for four agricultural products imported from trading partners, in line with obligations under the World Trade Organization (WTO) framework.
Deputy Government Spokesperson Aiyarin Phanrit told the media that the move was approved by the cabinet at its meeting this week. The products include onion seeds, dried onions, seed potatoes and fresh potatoes.
She said that, under the resolution, which will take effect during 2026–2028, a 0% tariff will mostly be imposed on the four imported products, with the following details:
Imported onion seeds within the annual quota of 3.15 tonnes will be subject to a 0% tariff, while those exceeding the quota will face a 218% tariff.
Imported dried onions within the annual quota of 1,256.50 tonnes will be subject to a 0% tariff, while those exceeding the quota will face a 142% tariff.
Imported seed potatoes within the annual quota will be subject to a 0% tariff, while those exceeding the quota will face a 125% tariff.
Imported fresh or raw potatoes within the annual quota of 83,000 tonnes will be subject to a 27% tariff, while those exceeding the quota will face a 125% tariff.
According to the deputy government spokesperson, the nearly 100% tariff exemption for the four imported products will take effect from January 1 to December 31 during the two-year period.
