Cambodia seeks peace talks with Thailand through Gen Tea Banh
The Cambodian government has sought peace talks with Thailand through General Tia Banh, a former Cambodian deputy prime minister and defense minister, according to Thai Supreme Commander General Ukrit Boontanont.
He stated today that he had received a message from General Banh proposing the talks, but he added that actions, not just words, matter, as they will demonstrate whether Cambodia can be trusted.
He also mentioned that all factors must be taken into consideration to form an accurate picture, so Thailand can respond appropriately. Furthermore, he emphasized the need for a Plan B in case the situation does not align with expectations.
The Supreme Commander pointed out that both countries must wait for the right time to resume peace talks, stressing that Cambodia must first prove its sincerity in wanting sustainable peace with Thailand and must fully cooperate in addressing unresolved issues.
“It takes two hands to clap. Right now, it is premature to seek peace talks,” General Ukrit said.
In response to Cambodia’s withdrawal from the Cobra Gold joint military exercise this year, General Ukrit explained that Cambodia had already completed its term as a participant, and it was now another country’s turn.
