All efforts will, however, be made to avoid further escalation, so that people can continue to live and work in peace.
He offered an assurance that he will not surrender even an inch of land and that the country's boundaries have been clearly demarcated. As such, the government is certain of its legitimacy.
Anutin, also a deputy prime minister, was speaking at a meeting in Ubon Ratchathani province, attended by senior officials from the north-eastern border provinces of Ubon Ratchathani, Amnat Charoen and Si Sa Ket today.
He said that this year, provincial authorities have had to deal not only with natural disasters, but also with ongoing conflicts with Cambodia, and that he has instructed all provinces to ensure that shelters are fully equipped.
“The military are providing security on the front lines, while the Interior Ministry is coordinating with provincial authorities, to ensure there are enough shelters, especially in schools,” he said.
He sought to reassure the public, saying that the military will prevent any intrusion into Thai territory.
If the situation worsens, Anutin said he will also fight. “There is nothing to fear when defending our homeland. It would be an honour in one's lifetime to protect our nation. If necessary, we must be ready. It is the duty of every Thai citizen, not just the armed forces."
Anutin stressed that the conflicts must be strictly limited to the front lines and that civilians from both countries, who work and live in Thailand, remain friends.
“These issues must be separated. Should fighting occur, it is a matter for national security forces, while civilians must maintain their relationships peacefully, without escalating tensions,” he said.
