Thai shrimp exports to Malaysia expected to resume within 30 days
Thailand and Malaysia are working to expedite health and hygiene inspections of five Thai shrimp species, with exports expected to resume within 30 days, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives.
Speaking after a meeting in Malaysia with Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, the Malaysian Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Thailand’s Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit said yesterday that both sides have agreed to fast-track Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) and chemical residue inspections.
The move follows Malaysia's temporary import ban on five species of shrimp from Thailand.
Suriya expressed confidence that, with accelerated bilateral discussions, the verification process could be finalised within 30 days, allowing trade to return to normal.
The talks also touched upon Thailand's plans to export beef and pork products to Malaysia. The Malaysian government has pledged to speed up its regulatory processes to facilitate these livestock exports as soon as possible.
Regarding the shrimp ban, Malaysian authorities explained that the temporary restrictions are part of newly implemented import and export standards for agricultural goods.
Following the successful negotiations, Thailand’s agriculture minister expressed confidence that smooth export operations will resume shortly.
