Deputy Commerce Minister Napintorn Srisunpang told reporters that the two famed mango varieties are “Khai Tuek Padriew Mango” (locally known as Ma Muang Khai Teuk Padriew) and “Raet Padriew Mango” (Ma Muang Raet Padriew), both grown in the Padriew area of the eastern province.
He revealed that these indigenous Thai mangoes, both belonging to the Anacardiaceae family, were recently registered as Geographical Indication (GI) products at both the provincial and national levels by the Department of Intellectual Property under his ministry.
The Thai government is promoting these newly recognized GI mango varieties for export, with Japan and Vietnam identified as the most promising markets. Their initial estimated market value is approximately Bt87 million.
Ma Muang Khai Teuk Padriew is known for its green, nutty, sweet, and sour taste, while Ma Muang Raet Padriew develops a similar flavor profile when left to ripen further—both qualities being long-recognized as their distinctive characteristics.
