Senior runners finding purpose and community in Suan Luang Rama IX Park
From a local fitness trend to a viral sensation, a group of elderly runners at Suan Luang Rama IX Park is proving that age is truly just a number. With a collective age exceeding 1,000 years, the ‘Zone 2’ running club has captured the hearts of netizens across Thailand, turning their morning routine into a national inspiration.
“While the physical gains are significant, the true heart of the club lies in the mental and social benefits, providing seniors with a sense of purpose and a tight-knit community to start their day,” Pol. Capt. Chairat Premsiri, the founder of the club, told Thai PBS.
The group currently boasts around 50 regular members, with the eldest, aged 84, running consistently for three years.
“The secret to longevity in the sport is proper technique. In the beginning, I had to learn how to run correctly," the club’s eldest member explained. "For seniors, protecting the knees and joints is the top priority. Once you master the posture and the stride, you can keep going for a long time without any injuries," he advised.
Every morning, starting as early as 5am, the park comes alive with a unique rhythm. It is not just the sound of footsteps hitting the pavement, but the melodic humming and singing of seniors moving in unison.
The atmosphere feels less like a grueling workout and more like a high-energy health fan meet, where laughter is as abundant as the morning mist.
The group focuses on Zone 2 training, a low-intensity steady state exercise during which the heart rate remains at 60-70% of its maximum.
Experts and enthusiasts alike swear by this zone for its ability to optimise fat burning through aerobic metabolism, strengthen cardiovascular health without overstraining the heart and build endurance while minimising the risk of injury.
Such activities take place Monday through Friday, 5.30am to 6.30am. Interested individuals are invited to join the group.
