Thaksin remains the ‘soul’ of Pheu Thai, but will not take official advisory role - Julapun
Pheu Thai leader Julapun Amornvivat has explained that the decision-making power rests solely with the party’s executive committee, as former premier Thaksin Shinawatra nears release on parole.
"Thaksin has been the 'soul' of our movement since the Thai Rak Thai era," Julapun said. “The Pheu Thai Party will not, however, appoint the former prime minister to an official advisory position following his scheduled release on parole later this month,” Julapun announced today.
The announcement came after rumours circulated that Thaksin might take on an advisory role, since parole regulations do not explicitly forbid political involvement.
While acknowledging Thaksin’s enduring influence, Julapun sought to downplay concerns over the party’s independence.
“Pheu Thai is now a political institution that does not rely on any single individual. Our operations and decisions are strictly under the authority of the party’s executive committee,” he said.
Julapun believes that the former party leader is a knowledgeable individual with ideas that are beneficial to society, who can utilise his expertise to express opinions on politics or the economy. If those views are found to be useful, they can then be brought forward for discussion.
He emphasised, however, that Thaksin will certainly not be involved in the party’s decision-making process.
Julapun also expressed personal delight regarding Thaksin’s upcoming release on May 11, noting that the 76-year-old statesman should be allowed to spend time with his family after the parole process is finalised.
Regarding the day of release, the Labour Minister confirmed that the party has made no official preparations for a reception. He noted though that any party members wishing to greet Thaksin at Klong Prem Central Prison may do so in a personal capacity.
