Bomb near Thai-Myanmar border prompts evacuation in Mae Hong Son
Hundreds of Thai nationals living near the Thai-Myanmar border in Sob Moei district of the northern province of Mae Hong Son have been evacuated to safer areas after a bomb was dropped on their village this morning by a Myanmar military aircraft.
Informed Thai military sources said Myanmar deployed a Yak-130 and a MiG-29 to carry out air strikes on Karen National Union (KNU) rebel forces based near the Thai border, close to Ban Mae Sam Laeb on the banks of the Salween River.
The sources said nine bombs were dropped by the two jets, but one fell near Ban Mae Sam Laeb, causing panic among villagers who scrambled to take cover.
Paramilitary rangers and local officials were dispatched to evacuate residents. No casualties have been reported.
