The Thai Navy has launched an investigation into the disappearance of a Thai national flag from a flagpole on the Thai-Cambodian border, suspecting possible Cambodian involvement.

Navy spokesperson Rear Admiral Parat Rattanachiayaphan confirmed that the incident occurred on April 18 in an area near Ban Phakkat in Pong Nam Ron District.

The location is marked by a natural stream that clearly defines the U-shaped boundary between the two countries, the spokesperson said.

Upon learning of the disappearance, marine task force members immediately replaced the flag, Parat said, symbolising Thailand’s control over the area.

Following the incident, security has been tightened, with both day and night patrols along roads near the border, additional barbed wire has been installed in high-risk areas and there is closer monitoring of entry and exit routes.

The Chanthaburi Marine Task Force reported that its patrol noticed the missing flag and informed commanding officers immediately. They also gathered evidence to identify those responsible.

The spokesperson said the Navy raised the issue with a senior Cambodian military officer, who denied any involvement. The investigation is ongoing.

There were also reports that the Thai marine unit has coordinated with Cambodian military counterparts and the governor of Pailin Province, raising concerns over alleged incursions into Thai territory.

Thailand suspects that someone may have crossed into the area when water levels receded, allowing access to zones that are normally flooded.

The Navy warned that, if any violation of Thailand’s sovereignty is confirmed, appropriate and decisive countermeasures will be taken.

Separately, the task force stated that the situation in the area remains fully under Thai control, with no clashes or violence reported. It added that the incident was isolated and has not affected overall national security.

The unit stressed, however, that any act that disrespects the Thai national flag or undermines national sovereignty is considered serious and unacceptable.

It added that any future incidents would be formally recorded and protests will be made through appropriate channels.
