A female member of Thai Airways International’s cabin crew was arrested by the Australian Border Force (ABF) at Melbourne Airport, Australia, last Thursday for allegedly attempting to smuggle about one kilogram of heroin into the country.

The illegal narcotics were found concealed in 12 tote bags in her luggage, according to a statement issued today by the Australian Federal Police (AFP).

In Bangkok today, THAI CEO Chai Eamsiri said the airline has established a disciplinary committee to investigate the incident. He confirmed that the 26-year-old crew member on Flight TG 465, whose identity has been withheld, will be dismissed from service immediately if the charges against her are substantiated.

According to the AFP, ABF officers became suspicious after finding 12 tote bags in the cabin crew member’s luggage during an X-ray scan.

They opened the suitcase and searched the cotton bags, where they found a white powder hidden in the linings. The substance later tested positive as heroin.

The AFP said the heroin, weighing about one kilogram, has an estimated street value of AU$500,000 (approximately Bt11.47 million).

The suspect has been charged with possessing heroin for trafficking, an offence that carries a maximum prison sentence of 25 years upon conviction. She remains in custody and is due to appear before the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on September 14.

Simone Butcher, head of the AFP, said Australia would continue to take a zero-tolerance approach towards anyone who abuses a position of trust to facilitate criminal activity.

“Anyone attempting to import illegal drugs into Australia, regardless of rank or position, will be targeted and face the full force of the law,” Butcher said.

In a statement issued today, THAI said it has been coordinating closely with relevant authorities in both Thailand and Australia to establish the facts and is cooperating with officials in accordance with legal procedures.

The airline said it has strict rules, regulations and supervisory measures governing the conduct of all employees, including pilots and cabin crew. Employees are strictly prohibited from possessing, importing, transporting, or being involved in any way with illegal substances or items.

THAI said it regularly reminds employees of the need to comply strictly with company regulations, as well as the laws of all countries where it operates. In cases of misconduct, the airline said it would take decisive action.

Regarding the incident, THAI said it understands that the matter concerns the conduct of an individual employee.
