Cambodia's king heads home after cancer treatment in Beijing

Cambodia’s King Norodom Sihamoni, who has been receiving cancer treatment in Beijing, is scheduled to return to Phnom Penh this Friday, the Khmer Times reports.

The King will be accompanied by Queen Mother Norodom Monineath Sihanouk.

Cambodian senate spokesperson, Chea Thyrith, said the King's health has improved and returned to normal after receiving medical treatment in Beijing.

He added that Senate President Hun Sen and Prime Minister Hun Manet had closely monitored the King's health throughout his treatment.

The King and the Queen Mother travelled to Beijing on February 27th for a medical check-up. In April, the 72-year-old King said that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer and would remain in China for an extended period to undergo treatment.

Doctors in Beijing said that the treatment would require the monarch to stay in hospital for up to two months.

A lifelong bachelor who speaks French, Czech and English, the King spent most of his adult life abroad pursuing a career in the arts, before ascending the throne in 2004.

He succeeded his father, King Norodom Sihanouk, who abdicated after undergoing cancer treatment himself in Beijing.

During the King's stay in China, Hun Sen was appointed Acting Head of State.
