The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is to undertake a major upgrade of its bus stop system, so that waiting for a bus in Bangkok will no longer be a guessing game, BMA spokesperson Aekvarunyoo Amrapala a revealed today.

“This upgrade is not just about replacing bus stops,” Aekvarunyoo said, adding, “It’s about transforming the commuting experience for people in Bangkok by making journey planning easier, reducing confusion over bus routes and creating smoother connections.”

“From now on, waiting for a bus in Bangkok will no longer be a guessing game,” he said.

Installation and system development are currently underway, with clearer progress expected by May and full completion targeted for next year.

The digital bus stops will allow passengers to track bus arrivals in real time. The system integrates data from major public and private transport operators, eliminating uncertainty when waiting.

The project is a collaboration between the BMA, Mayday, Grab and the Tourism Authority of Thailand, combining funding, technology and transport data.

The initiative aims at installing 1,100 upgraded bus stops across the city this year, nearly half of which will be equipped with digital, real-time information displays.

Aekvarunyoo said the project is designed to make bus stops easier to use and better suited to urban lifestyles. The new system will provide comprehensive travel information at a single point, including bus routes, destinations and arrival times.

Bangkok currently has around 5,199 bus stops in operation. Of these, more than 1,100 are being upgraded. 600 will be redesigned conventional stops, while 500 will feature digital displays.

Under the project, each stop will also include a walking map showing the surrounding area, helping passengers identify their location and plan onward journeys. Nearby landmarks and attractions, more than 30 in some areas, will also be highlighted.
