Parole board agrees to release ex-PM Thaksin on parole on May 11
The parole board of the Ministry of Justice resolved today to release imprisoned former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra on parole on May 11, requiring him to wear an electronic monitoring ankle bracelet for the remainder of his sentence.
The board, which is chaired by Tharinee Saengsawang, deputy permanent secretary for justice, and includes representatives from the departments of Corrections, Rights and Liberties Protection, Probation and the Office of Narcotics Control Board, took about three hours to approve parole for a list of more than 500 qualifying inmates, including Thaksin.
The list had been screened by the parole committee of each prison and the parole committee of the Corrections Department before it was sent to the ministry’s parole committee for finalisation.
According to the subcommittee of the Department of Corrections, Thaksin will be required to wear the electronic monitoring device until the completion of the sentence.
Thaksin is now over 70 and is suffering from underlying ailments.
He will be released from Klong Prem Central Prison on the morning of May 11 will remain on parole for four months, after which he will be a free man again.
On September 9, 2025, the Supreme Court’s Criminal Division for Persons Holding Political Positions, ordered Thaksin to serve one year in prison after he was found to have evaded the one-year jail term from a previous conviction by spending six months on the 14th floor of the Police General Hospital, claiming critical health conditions which were ruled to be false.
