Thai deminer loses foot in landmine blast near Cambodian border
A member of Thailand’s Humanitarian Mine Action Unit (HMAU) lost his right foot this morning after accidentally triggering an anti-personnel landmine while carrying out routine demining operations near the Thai-Cambodian border in Nam Yuen district of the northeastern province of Ubon Ratchathani.
The Second Army Region reported that the incident took place at about 10.30am, when the explosion severed the right foot of Sgt Maj (1st Class) Charnnarong Wongchana.
His teammates rushed to his aid, moved him to safety and took him to the district hospital.
The victim will be airlifted to the military hospital in Warin Chamrap district, which is better equipped to treat blast injuries.
The Thai-controlled Anh Ma border pass, where Charnnarong was injured, was the scene of a bloody battle between Thai and Cambodian forces last December.
