Minor earthquake rattles Tak's Mae Sot district

A minor earthquake of magnitude 2.9 struck Mae Sot district of Tak early this morning, located on the western edge of northern Thailand, causing light tremors but no reported damage or casualties.

The Earthquake Observation Division of the Meteorological Department reported that the quake occurred at 4.32am.

The epicentre was located in Mae Kasa sub-district of Mae Sot, at latitude 16.938 degrees north and longitude 98.710 degrees east, at a very shallow depth of just one kilometre.

Residents near the epicentre reported feeling slight vibrations from the tremor.

The department noted that the intensity of the quake was low and, because its magnitude and epicentre did not meet the emergency threshold, no alert was issued via the government's Cell Broadcast warning system.
