Authorities check data centre in Huai Khwang area

Officials from the Pollution Control Department (PCD) and Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) today continue their checks of the potential environmental impacts caused by a data centre in Huai Khwang district.

The officials measured the noise level emitting from the ‘Tele House (Thailand)’ data centre, tested the water it was discharging and measured the level of heat around the centre.

Surin Worakijthamrong, director general of the PCD, said that his officials checked the same data centre on the 21st and 22nd of this month, covering sound levels, air pollution, waste water discharge and heat for analysis and assessment.

The checks found the average noise level over 24 hours was 61.5 decibels, which was within the 70 decibels limit set by law. The peak level of noise was measured at 77.6 decibels, which is below the 115 decibels limit, and the level of disturbing noise was 2.3-6.1 decibels, which does not exceed the permissible level of 10 decibels.

The officials did not find any fuel contaminant in the discharged water, no VOCs and no H2S gas was found, he said, adding that lab test results will be known in two weeks.

As for heat in and around the data centre, he said infrared cameras detected that the temperature outside the centre was not affected by the heat generated from operations inside the building.

He said the department will use all the information from the tests to develop measures to protect the environment from the potential impacts of data centres.
