Another person injured in the Rama 2 bridge collapse dies in hospital

One of the workers seriously injured in the collapse of the cross beam of an elevated expressway, under construction on the Rama 2 Road, has died, bringing to death toll to six, according to the Por Teck Toeng Foundation.

An official at the foundation said that the injured man, a Burmese migrant worker, was pronounced dead at the Taksin Hospital, where he had been since Saturday morning when the accident took place.

The official said that relatives of the deceased went to the construction site to look for him today and were shown his smartphone and bag, which were found at the site. His co-workers told them that he was last seen working on one of the cross beams.

The relatives then went to Taksin Hospital to claim his remains.

Emergency teams have also suspended the search for two missing workers today, after it was reported that both are safe.

In the meantime, workers have been busily trying to remove piles of fallen beams, steel and other debris from the Rama 2 Road surface. The work cannot be done quickly, though, because the beams and steel must be cut into smaller pieces for removal. Mobile cranes, backhoes and other heavy machinery have been deployed to the site.

According to the Expressway and Rapid Transit Authority, about 80% of the main truss, 30% of the H-beams and 50% of the tower support have been removed from the road surface so far.

The authority expects the Chalerm Maha Nakhon expressway, at the in-bound Dao Khanong toll plaza, to reopen to traffic in seven days. The out-bound toll plaza will not reopen for 30 days.
