China urges Thailand and Cambodia to exercise restraint

The Chinese Embassy in Bangkok issued a statement on its Facebook page today, urging Thailand and Cambodia to exercise restraint and to try to settle their border dispute through negotiation.

The statement said that, in the past several days, the Thai people have shown interest in China’s stance regarding the border dispute.

“China adheres to the principle of solving conflicts through negotiation and consultation, to maintain peace and stability in the region,” said statement.

Both Thailand and Cambodia are China’s close neighbours and China hopes tensions will deescalate as quickly as possible.

China would be pleased to coordinate with Thailand and Cambodia and will try its best to maintain peace and stability in the region, according to the statement.

The statement was issued as Chinese Ambassador to Thailand Han Zhiqiang concluded his term. On June 4, he paid a farewell call on Thai prime minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra at the Government House.
