Police launch late-night barbecue sting to catch street racers in Samut Prakan

Bang Phli district police in Samut Prakan have come up with a new trick to tackle street racing by motorcyclists, which causes a nuisance for local residents and poses a threat to other motorists.

Last night, a group of 16 mostly plain-clothes police officers from the station held a late-night pork barbecue on a road island next to Chalerm Phra Kiat Road while quietly observing a gathering of young motorcyclists. Many of them were spectators there to cheer on the racers or place illegal bets on the race.

As the race was about to begin, the undercover officers alerted their colleagues waiting nearby to move in and block all escape routes.

It is not known how many people were rounded up or how many of them were racers.

A Bang Phli police officer later said they had no intention of using the public space for recreational purposes, adding that they cleaned up the road island after the operation.
