Thailand urges Cambodia to avoid provocative acts

Thailand’s foreign minister, Sihasak Phuangketkeow, has reminded Cambodia of the need to avoid making any provocative statements or carrying out any actions that could lead to an escalation of border tensions, as stipulated in a joint statement.

He made the remarks in reference to an incident last Friday night, when Cambodian troops triggered a flare alarm after approaching the Thai border fence at Phu Pha Lek in Kantharalak district of Si Sa Ket province.

The Thai military responded by firing a warning shell into Cambodian territory. Less than an hour later, an M79 grenade, allegedly fired by Cambodian troops, exploded in the same area.

For a ceasefire to be sustainable and for mutual trust to be restored and strengthened, Sihasak said it is imperative that both sides refrain from provocative actions or statements.

Asked whether he could be assured that border conflict would not flare up in the lead-up to Thailand’s general election this Sunday, the foreign minister said Thailand and Cambodia can always engage in dialogue to settle their differences peacefully, provided Cambodia does not provoke Thailand verbally or through violent actions.

He also said Thailand is closely monitoring Cambodian troop and weapon movements, stressing Thailand’s firm commitment to avoiding another escalation of border tensions.
