Prajadhipok Road inbound reopens after MRT Purple Line tunnel leak

Three inbound lanes on Prajadhipok Road, from the Wongwian Yai roundabout heading towards the Ban Khaek intersection, were reopened to 24-hour traffic at 6am this morning, following successful efforts to control a water leak in an underground railway tunnel.



Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt announced that the situation at the MRT Southern Purple Line extension project construction site has been stabilised.

“Measures, including sealing the ends of the tunnel, injecting water to balance subterranean pressure and soil reinforcement, have significantly stemmed the leakage,” he said.

He added that “While contractors originally planned to pump 10,000 cubic metres of water into the structure to counteract groundwater force, engineers found that just over 1,000 cubic metres was enough to equalise the pressure.”

According to the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA), continuous ground-grouting operations, down to a depth of 37 metres, have effectively halted water ingress.

City Hall and multi-agency engineering teams monitoring the site have confirmed that no further ground subsidence has been detected and that buildings within a 30-metre radius show no significant structural movement.

Outbound lanes, heading towards Wongwian Yai, will remain closed for the time being, to ensure workers can safely complete additional tunnel reinforcement work.
