Northern Thailand as global food-security pillar
Northern Thailand could become a crucial pillar of global food security as severe climate shocks, unpredictable weather and shifting trade patterns place unprecedented pressure on agricultural supplies worldwide.
A policy report by the Institute for Strategic Policy (ISP) examines how northern Thailand, which has more than 16 million rai of agricultural land, is using smart agricultural technology, sustainable farming practices and cross-border logistics to turn climate challenges into opportunities within global supply chains.
The region produces 10 crops that are important to international supply chains and regional food security: rice, longan, animal-feed maize, sugarcane, temperate vegetables, Arabica coffee, tea, cassava, avocado and macadamia nuts.
According to the report, titled "Climate Crisis Challenges to Becoming Northern Thailand's Food Security Hub", the region's diverse microclimates, ranging from low-lying plains to high-altitude mountain ranges, allow year-round cultivation despite increasingly erratic weather patterns.
Dr Parichat Theanjumpol, co-author of the study with researchers from Chiang Mai University's Postharvest Technology Research Center, said that while climate change has become a severe threat to the global food system, northern Thailand has the resilience and research capacity to play an important regional and global role in agricultural technology and food security.
Rice, the region's main staple crop, covers roughly 14 million rai and has an annual production of 3.5 to 4 million metric tonnes, valued at approximately 40 billion baht (US$1.2 billion).
Despite severe droughts, prolonged flooding and rising temperatures, growers are adapting through alternate wetting and drying (AWD) irrigation, laser land levelling and climate-resilient seeds.
These measures help protect Thailand's strategic grain reserves while meeting growing global demand for low-carbon, sustainable rice.
Longan, a high-value export crop generating up to 45 billion baht (US$1.4 billion) across 1.2 million rai, faces challenges from warmer winters and heavy rainfall.
Local producers are using drone-based canopy management, automated misting systems and bioactive seed and peel extraction to develop products for markets in cold-climate countries and the Middle East, including premium ready-to-eat fruit and freeze-dried products.
For livestock feed, animal-feed maize covers up to 5 million rai and generates 38 billion baht (US$1.1 billion), although production faces challenges including drought-related pollination problems, slope erosion and field-burning haze.
Farmers are adopting drought-tolerant hybrids for post-rice cropping and converting crop residues into biochar to store carbon in the soil, helping promote Thailand as a regional source of burn-free, low-carbon livestock feed.
Arabica coffee covers 100,000 rai and contributes 1.8 billion baht to the economy.
Growers are adapting to rising temperatures through precision shade-grown agroforestry, carbon-neutral anaerobic processing and blockchain-based traceability, enabling them to export "Forest-Friendly Specialty Coffee" that complies with strict EU regulations.
The report identifies four core capabilities supporting Thailand's potential role as a global food-security hub.
First, topographical variations ranging from 200 to more than 1,500 metres above sea level provide agro-ecological resilience, allowing highland crops to help offset production losses in lowland areas.
Second, climate-smart agricultural techniques such as alternate wetting and drying can reduce water use in rice fields by up to 50% and cut methane emissions by half.
Third, food-safety and digital-traceability frameworks help producers comply with standards and requirements such as Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), organic certification, Geographic Indication (GI) and the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).
Fourth, as a gateway to the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS), Thailand's cold-chain infrastructure can facilitate the rapid distribution of food during emergencies across Southeast Asia.
To maintain this trajectory, the Institute for Strategic Policy recommends targeted public-private investment in smart water-distribution networks, farm-level carbon-credit verification mechanisms and microfinancing frameworks to help smallholder farmers adopt modern agricultural technologies.
