‘Royal Initiative’ traffic officer helps emergency births of twins and safety of mother
The Traffic Police Management Centre has highly commended the Royal Initiative traffic police officers for their life-saving actions in successfully delivering one twin in a bathroom and securing the safe hospital birth of the second during a critical roadside emergency on Tuesday.
Pol. Lt. Gen. Nithithorn Chintakanon, Commissioner of the Education Bureau and head of the traffic police image-building working group of the Royal Thai Police, praised the officers for their swift response, decisive action and specialised knowledge, noting they embodied the true spirit of public service.
The drama unfolded at around 8.30am on July 14, when the ‘Royal Initiative’ traffic police radio centre received an urgent call requesting assistance for a pregnant woman who had gone into labour inside a bathroom at a residence in Pracha Rat Bamphen Soi 9.
Upon their arrival, officers found the mother had already given birth to the first twin, who was still attached to the placenta via the umbilical cord, while the second twin remained unborn. Officers immediately began assessing the highly sensitive situation, to ensure the safety of both mother and both children.
Pol. Sgt. Maj. Nathamon Prasongsan, a female officer who had recently joined the Royal Initiative unit, took charge. Utilising medical skills acquired from specialised childbirth assistance training at Bangkok Hospital, she performed a preliminary assessment, wiped the newborn clean and used a rubber bulb syringe to clear fluids from the infant's airway.
Her prompt actions induced the baby's first cry, bringing immense relief to the family and onlookers.
An ambulance and emergency medical team from the Narenthorn EMS Centre arrived shortly after to cut the umbilical cord and check the vital signs of the mother and the second twin, who were both found to be stable.
Royal Initiative traffic police then cleared a path through Bangkok's notorious traffic, escorting the ambulance to Rajavithi Hospital. The coordinated effort allowed medical staff to successfully and safely deliver the second twin upon arrival.
Pol. Lt. Gen. Nithithorn commended all the officers involved, with special praise for Pol. Sgt. Maj. Nathamon. Despite being a newcomer to the unit, her bravery and competence under pressure marked her as a rising star within the traffic police division, demonstrating that officers are ready to protect and serve the public at a moment's notice.
